The Truth: B12 does boost energy, but that’s just the beginning.

Yes, vitamin B12 (cobalamin) helps your body produce red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your system. More oxygen means more energy. But B12 also plays a critical role in:

  • Fat metabolism – Breaking down stored fat for energy
  • Protein synthesis – Building and maintaining lean muscle mass
  • DNA production – Supporting cell growth and repair
  • Nervous system function – Regulating mood, focus, and stress response

Without adequate B12, your metabolism slows to a crawl. You feel exhausted. Your body clings to fat. And no amount of dieting or exercise seems to help.

Myth #2: “You Can Get Enough B12 from Food”

The Truth: Maybe. But probably not.

B12 is found primarily in animal products meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. If you eat a balanced diet with plenty of these foods, you might be fine.

But here’s the problem: Up to 15% of the general population is B12-deficient, according to the National Institutes of Health. And certain groups are at even higher risk:

  • Vegetarians and vegans (no animal products = no dietary B12)
  • People with digestive disorders (Crohn’s, celiac, IBS)
  • Anyone taking metformin, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors
  • Post-bariatric surgery patients (reduced absorption capacity)

Even if you eat meat regularly, your body might not be absorbing it properly. That’s why testing your B12 levels is so important and why B12 injections often work when oral supplements fail.

Myth #3: “Oral B12 Supplements Work Just as Well as Injections”

The Truth: Not even close.

Oral B12 supplements have to pass through your digestive system, where absorption can be limited by:

  • Low stomach acid
  • Digestive disorders
  • Medications that interfere with absorption
  • Age-related decline in intrinsic factor (a protein needed for B12 absorption)

B12 injections bypass all of that. The vitamin goes directly into your bloodstream for 100% absorption. Most patients feel a noticeable energy boost within 24-48 hours of their first injection.
