FAT stands for Famine and Temperature — the two ancient threats your body is still protecting you from today. When chronic stress, dieting, or poor sleep trigger this survival response, your metabolism shifts into storage mode. No amount of exercise can override a body that believes it’s fighting for survival. The first step to lasting weight loss isn’t burning more calories — it’s signaling safety.

The Workout That Made Me Fatter

I was in the gym five days a week.

Sweating through early morning sessions before work. Eating salads when everyone else had pizza. Tracking every bite, every rep, every step.

And I was still the heaviest I had ever been in my life.

That wasn’t a motivation problem. That wasn’t laziness. I was working harder at losing weight than I had worked at almost anything. And the scale either refused to move, or it crept in the wrong direction.

I remember standing in the gym locker room after a brutal session, completely spent, and thinking: What is wrong with me? Because I was doing everything right. Everything they told me to do. The cardio. The weights. The portion control. The willpower.

And the most confusing part wasn’t the number on the scale. It was the feeling in my body. I wasn’t losing fat. I felt like I was losing ground. Like the harder I pushed, the tighter my body held on.

That’s because it was.

Here’s what I didn’t understand back then: my body wasn’t broken. It wasn’t betraying me. It was running a program — a deep, ancient, biological program — that my gym sessions couldn’t touch. No matter how many miles I logged or how many calories I cut, I was working on the surface of a problem that lived much deeper than that.

The Science: When your body perceives that it is under threat — whether from stress, restriction, or exhaustion — it activates survival mechanisms that actively resist fat loss. Exercise, when done from a place of desperation or chronic stress, can reinforce these mechanisms rather than reverse them.

I kept pressing the gas harder. But the parking brake was fully locked.

Here’s where everything starts to make sense.

If you’ve ever felt like your body is working against you — like it’s actively resisting every effort you make — there’s a reason for that. But it’s not the reason you’ve been told.

Your body isn’t broken. It isn’t lazy. It isn’t punishing you for eating that slice of pizza in 2019.

It’s running a program. A very old, very smart, very stubborn program.

Jon calls it the FAT Program.

FAT Stands for Famine and Temperature

That’s it. Two words. Two ancient survival signals that your body is constantly scanning for.

These aren’t modern inventions. They’re biological software your ancestors relied on to survive Ice Ages, famines, and brutal winters. When the environment turned hostile, their bodies adapted. They stored fat. They slowed metabolism. They protected every calorie like it was the last one on Earth.

Because sometimes, it was.

Here’s what activates a FAT Program today:

  • The Famine Signal: Your body believes food is scarce. This gets triggered by caloric restriction, crash dieting, skipping meals, and stress-related cortisol spikes that mimic starvation at a cellular level.

You can eat organic. You can count every macro. You can drink the green smoothies and skip the bread and say no to dessert for months on end. And your body can still hold onto every pound like its life depends on it.

Because from your body’s perspective? It does.

When you are under stress — any kind of stress — your body releases a hormone called cortisol. And cortisol has one job: keep you alive.

The message it sends is not subtle. It’s essentially: “We are in danger. This is not the time to be lean and fast. This is the time to be insulated, protected, and stockpiled.”

So your body upregulates fat-storage enzymes. It downregulates fat-burning hormones. It pulls glucose into storage and holds onto every calorie it can find.

And here’s the part that changes everything.

This is not a willpower problem. It is a hormonal one.

Now bring this back to the gym.

Moderate movement — a walk you enjoy, a swim that feels good, dancing in your kitchen — signals safety to your body. It signals vitality. It says: “We are alive, we are well, we have energy to spare.”

But punishing exercise? The kind you do because you hate your body? The kind you drag yourself through at 5am out of guilt or desperation?

That registers as another stressor. Your body interprets it as: “We are being chased. We are burning through our resources. We must hold on to every calorie we have left.”

The harder you push from that place, the tighter the FAT Program holds.

There’s also a hormonal consequence that goes even deeper. It’s called leptin resistance.

Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain: “We have enough stored fat. We are safe. We can relax and burn.” When everything is working properly, leptin acts like a volume dial — turning fat storage down and fat burning up.

But chronic stress and inflammatory nutrition disrupt that signal. The brain stops hearing it. The message gets sent, but nothing receives it.
