A Champion’s Journey to Wellness with Glenn Ruth
Glenn Ruth, better known to wrestling fans as “Thrasher” from the iconic WWE tag team “The Headbangers,” has traded in his signature dreadlocks and kilt for a new uniform: the YouFit gym shirt!
Luckily, Glenn’s passion for inspiring others remains as strong as ever.
Now the General Manager of YouFit West Palm Beach (Okeechobee Blvd), Glenn’s journey from the high-octane world of professional wrestling to the fitness industry is a testament to the power of transformation and community.
Busting Myths & Finding Fitness
What’s the biggest misconception people have about professional wrestling?
“That it’s fake!” Glenn laughs, “The injuries are 100% real. There’s no off-season; it’s all year round. There were years that I wrestled 280-290 days a year.”
The demanding schedule and physically punishing nature of professional wrestling take a toll. Behind the spectacle and entertainment lies a grueling reality that requires immense athleticism, dedication, and pain tolerance. Glenn’s experience speaks to the often-overlooked dedication and physical demands of sports entertainment.
What are some of the funniest or most memorable moments you’ve had on the road?
“The most memorable moments I’ve had in wrestling were winning at WrestleMania 13 and also becoming WWE World Tag Team Champions,” Glenn shares.
These career highlights underscore the pinnacle of success in professional wrestling. WrestleMania, WWE’s flagship event, is a global phenomenon, and capturing the Tag Team Championship solidified The Headbangers’ place in wrestling history.
From Fan to Wellness Leader
Glenn’s connection to YouFit began long before his management role. “I first started at YouFit back in 2011 as a member, and I was 315 lbs,” he recounts. “I felt comfortable coming in because many members are going through the same thing. I lost around 100 pounds. I was around 215, the smallest I’ve been since high school.”
This personal transformation is at the heart of Glenn’s leadership approach. He understands the challenges and triumphs of the fitness journey firsthand. His story resonates with members seeking their own transformations, fostering a sense of relatability and encouragement.
Glenn’s transition from member to gym manager highlights the power of community and opportunity. “A team member recognized me from wrestling, and we would talk all the time about wrestling,” Glenn recalls. “One day he said, ‘Man, you’re here all the time, you should just get a job here!’ I went right into the manager’s office and got hired.”
This chance encounter led to a fulfilling career path, showcasing the unexpected opportunities that can arise within a supportive community.
More Than Just a Gym
What’s your overall vision for the gym and its place in the community?
“My vision for the gym is a place where everyone can come, feel comfortable, and achieve their goals,” Glenn explains. “Like an old-time store where everyone knows the manager, can go up and talk, and enjoy themselves.”
Glenn Ruth’s vision emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. He aims to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among members, transforming the gym into a hub for personal growth and social connection.
Did the gym’s environment and atmosphere support your journey?
“100%,” Glenn affirms, noting the crucial role that a supportive and positive environment plays in achieving fitness goals. YouFit’s commitment to creating such an atmosphere is central to our appeal and effectiveness, for Glenn and so many others who know: At YouFit, you can have it all.
Leading with Passion and Empathy
What are the biggest challenges you face as a general manager?
“Making people understand that they need this, and the misconceptions of a ‘gym’,” Glenn states.
This highlights the common perception of gyms as intimidating or exclusive spaces. The challenge lies in breaking down these barriers and demonstrating the accessibility and benefits of fitness for everyone.
How do you foster a positive and motivating work environment?
“I make work fun while doing what we need to do; everyone enjoys coming to work. Being an honest person, having integrity. Also having empathy with members and staff. Having a smile. And I enjoy what I do!”
Glenn’s leadership style prioritizes positivity, empathy, and genuine enthusiasm. He understands the importance of creating a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere for both staff and members.
What mindset shifts did you experience that helped you achieve your goals?
“It was a lifestyle change,” Glenn reflects: “A mindset.”
This emphasizes the mental and emotional aspects of transformation. Achieving fitness goals requires not only physical effort but also a shift in perspective and commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
