In one of the most unlikely bouts in the history of the sport, social media sensation Jake Paul won against famous boxer Mike Tyson by majority decision late Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
With scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73, all three judges decided in Paul’s favor.
With the victory, Tyson drops to 50-7 and Paul’s professional record rises to 11-1.
Tyson’s age caught up with him after an aggressive opening round. For the majority of the bout, Tyson seemed sluggish and hardly delivered any powerful blows.
From the middle of the round on, his offensive performance significantly decreased. Throughout the fight, the much younger Paul took little damage while barraged his opponent with hooks and jabs.
The July 20 battle between Tyson, 58, and Paul, 27, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, was pushed back after Tyson was treated for an ulcer flare-up while flying from Miami to Los Angeles in May.
After the fight
After the fight Paul remarked following the bout, “He’s exactly what I thought, one of the greatest to ever do it”. When he was asked who he wants to go against next, Jake said : “Anyone I want, everyone is next on the list.”
Tyson was also asked if this was his final fight and will he finally retire from boxing, but he said he still was not sure what will he do next. “I don’t think so,” Tyson said on the broadcast. “Maybe the brother (Logan Paul).”
Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) began boxing in 2020 and won six straight fights, most of them against former mixed martial arts competitors. Paul has won five straight fights, including the decision against Tyson, after his lone defeat in February 2023 against Tommy Fury.
In 1986, at the age of 20, Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) became the youngest heavyweight champion. A year later, he held unchallenged all three major titles. Before losing to James “Buster” Douglas by tenth-round knockout in February 1990, he had successfully defended the three titles six times. Mike tTson is regarded as one of the greatest and most formidable boxers in history.
