From Consultation to Results (The Ideal Patient Experience)
An interview-based guide with Callie Valko, Chief of Operations, Valley Medical Weight Loss & Med Spa
A med spa consultation should never feel like a rushed sales pitch. It should feel like what it is: a medical, customized conversation designed to protect your safety and help you reach your goals with realistic expectations.
In our interview, Callie Valko explained that the best patient experiences have two things in common:
-
The provider takes the time to understand you, and
-
The plan is built around what’s appropriate, not what’s trending.
Here’s what a proper consultation should include every time and why it matters.

A real consultation starts with your full health and skin history
Aesthetic treatments aren’t one-size-fits-all, and they shouldn’t be recommended without context.
Callie shared that a thorough consultation should review: Medical history, current medications and supplements, skincare routine and what you apply to your skin. Past aesthetic treatments (what you’ve had done and when), allergies and sensitivities, pregnant or nursing status (when relevant), cold sore history (some treatments can trigger outbreaks), recent or upcoming dental work (timing can matter), skin type and how your skin tends to respond, ethnicity/background considerations (important for certain energy-based devices).
This isn’t “extra.” This is how a provider makes safer recommendations.

Your provider should analyze your skin and match treatments to your goals
A good consultation isn’t just asking what you want. It’s helping you understand what’s realistic and what’s appropriate.
That includes: Looking at your skin and facial structure (not just a quick glance). Discussing what results you can expect and what takes time. Explaining why certain treatments may be better first steps than others. Making sure treatments don’t conflict with each other.
Why customization matters (and why cookie-cutter plans can backfire)
Customization is a safety issue, not a luxury.
If treatments are stacked too close together or done in the wrong order, you can end up with results that don’t look the way you expected, increased irritation or downtime, or a plan that works against your long-term goals.
A responsible provider builds a plan that fits your skin, your timeline and your comfort level, then adjusts based on how you respond.
You should leave with a plan you actually understand
A great consultation ends with clarity. You should know: What’s being recommended and why. What’s optional vs what’s medically appropriate. What your timeline looks like. What aftercare or follow-up is needed. What to do if you have questions after treatment.
And you should never feel pressured to decide on the spot.

What should a med spa consultation include?
Why do providers ask about supplements and skincare products?
Some supplements and topical products can affect sensitivity, healing, and how your skin responds. Knowing what you use helps providers make safer recommendations.
Why does ethnicity or skin type matter for certain treatments?
Can upcoming dental work affect aesthetic treatment timing?
Should I feel pressured to buy a package at my consultation?
