Bodybuilding icon Jay Cutler has years of experience in both bulking and shredding. In a recent video, Cutler explained how to gain lean muscle mass and bulk up during the winter without gaining weight.
After years of competing at the top levels of bodybuilding, Jay Cutler has an expert knowledge on what works regarding his diet. His competition with Ronnie Coleman, the former eight-time Mr. Olympia, was well-known. To be able to compete with Ronnie, Cutler had to consume an alarming quantity of food in order to defeat one of the largest bulk monsters the sport has ever seen.
In his prime, he bought a whole cow at a time, 150 pounds of poultry, and thirty dozen eggs, spending fifty thousand dollars annually on his diet.
Cutler’s efforts were rewarded in 2006 when he was selected as the candidate to depose Coleman. Not only that, but he is the only bodybuilder to regain the Mr. Olympia title after losing it.
Cutler talks on winter bulking
Winter bulking, according to Jay, is not a justification for overweight. Rather, he promotes the development of lean muscle mass, particularly before he started competing.
“As winter approaches, should you bulk? Now that is one term I hate to use here because when I think of bulking, I think of overweight and chubby.
What I like to do is I say okay, if I’m not in competition season, meaning if there’s less contests in this winter time, I would focus on putting on the mass. But you can build lean muscle mass.”
It’s important to keep the diet in check, aiming to eat as clean as possible – just slightly more than what would be consumed on a contest diet. Protein, carbohydrates, and fats, particularly saturated fats, should be carefully managed. The focus should be on ensuring the body gets enough calories and macros to sustain itself without going overboard. – Cutler says.
He also advises boosting food consumption to correspond with the intensity of your workouts. Particularly increasing the calories on leg or back workouts, which require more gym output. Also, keep an eye on the progress pictures to make sure you haven’t veered off course.
Jay also says that nowadays he favors clean bulking rather than the traditional bulking.
“I think it’s better now in today’s society, they want to be a lot leaner. They’re scared to be bigger. I think big is kind of out. I’m not sure what you think. Cutler explained.
