Remembering What’s Real Within You

The Courts Ruled Against Beach Yoga in San Diego. Here’s How Local Teachers Brought it Back.

A Yoga Practice To Take You Into Eight-Angle Pose (Astavakrasana)

The beginning of a New Year naturally primes yoga students to be receptive and open to inspiration, change and exploring their inner landscape. Yoga class themes, when carefully crafted and implemented, can be a conduit for inquiry, growth, reflection, transformation, and vulnerability. Yoga’s mindful breathwork and movement provide a potent platform to reflect on one’s journey and set aspirations for what lies ahead. As we move into the new year, consider incorporating one or more of the following themes into your January yoga classes:

1. New Beginnings

This is the most common and straightforward New Year’s theme—embracing the energy of new beginnings, renewal and growth. Encourage students to view each yoga sequence as a metaphor for the fresh start that the New Year offers. Use deep breathing exercises to cleanse the mind and body, and hip and heart opening asanas to welcome in change. Incorporate poses that symbolize new beginnings, such as Mountain Pose (for grounding, stability, confidence, inner strength, and resilience), Warrior I (to cultivate a sense of strength and courage and standing firmly in one’s own power), and Bow Pose (symbolizing opening up the body and mind to embrace new beginnings).

2. Setting Intentions

Instead of resolutions, guide your students in defining and setting meaningful intentions or sankalpas for the year ahead. Initiate this class theme with a meditation session focusing on what they wish to manifest in their everyday life. Encourage them to visualize or further formulate these intentions in their practice, using poses like Cobra Pose (to deeply connect with one’s true feelings, voice, and intuition), Tree Pose (to symbolize the growth and focus needed to firmly root one’s intentions), and Reclining Bound-Angle Pose (for releasing any obstacles that prevent one from receiving the goodness one deserves).

3. Releasing the Past

Letting go of emotional wounds, regrets, resentments, and past burdens is a helpful way to make space for new opportunities, healing and growth. Use calming and surrendering asanas such as Child’s Pose (to release tension in the upper back associated with grief, sorrow, and sadness), Pigeon Pose (to confront and release upsetting emotions, particularly those related to anger and rage), and Knee-Down Twist (for wringing out what no longer serves one’s highest good).

4. Growth and Transformation

Yoga is a powerful tool for self-reflection and self-awareness—both essential ingredients for growth, change and transformation. Foster self-discovery and metamorphosis with poses that encourage strength, openness, and resilience. Practice Bridge Pose (for inviting new perspectives and emotional growth), Half Moon Pose (to symbolize the cyclical nature of life and the moon’s ability to illuminate the path forward), and Sun Salutations (to harness the sun’s sun’s energy of growth and vitality and its power to dispel darkness and promote clarity of vision.)

5. Vision for the Future

We often choose to limit our possibilities and dreams based on past experiences, fears, or self-limiting beliefs. Challenge your students and dare them to dream big with asanas that promote expansion, courage, optimism, and confidence. Use Camel Pose (to open the heart and mind to new visions and aspirations), Warrior II (for embodying strength and determination), and Cobra Pose (to shed one’s skin of old beliefs and embrace new experiences, relationships, and opportunities for growth).

6. Celebrate Progress

Revisit any challenging asanas you have worked on in the past year, highlighting the growth and progress your students have made. Encourage students to reflect and acknowledge their progress. Incorporate poses like Chair Pose (to symbolize the strength and resilience they have developed), Crow Pose (to celebrate determination and persistence), and High Lunge Pose (to symbolize the strength and courage needed to step forward and progress along the path of yoga).

7. Welcome Change

Encourage your students to welcome in the changes of the new year with an open heart and a flexible mindset. Cultivate a sense of joy and excitement for the unknown through Heart-opening poses. Create a complicated sequence with unusual pose variations to promote adaptability and resilience to unpredictability. Use poses like Revolved Triangle (to challenge balance and encourage a flexible mindset), Happy Baby Pose (to approach change with a sense of curiosity and joy), or Sphinx Pose (to stay openhearted amidst changing circumstances).

8. Reflect with Gratitude

Reflecting with gratitude for the past year’s experiences will create a positive mindset for moving forward in the year ahead. Instead of getting bogged down in regrets, strengthen your students’ appreciation and contentment. Use poses that cultivate mindfulness and presence like Seated Forward Bend Pose (to invite introspection and self-reflection), Knees-to-Chest Pose (for accepting who and where you are), and Puppy Pose (to promote openness and receptivity to the present moment.

9. Celebrate Community and Connection

Recognize and celebrate the power of your yoga community for its support, connections, and encouragement. Incorporate one or more Partner Yoga poses like Double Downward Dog (to instill trust and teamwork), Partner Tree Pose (to enhance balance and cooperation), or and Partner Forward Fold (to enhance communication and understanding). Consider starting or ending the class in a circle, inviting each student to share their intentions, dreams, or a word that resonates with their hopes for the new year.
