How Healthy Living Blogs Got It Wrong for Women in Their 40s

If you’ve been struggling with weight loss, low energy, or stubborn health issues in your 40s, I want you to take a step back and ask yourself…

Are you still following the same healthy living blog trends that were popular when you were in your 20s and 30s? Because if you are, that might be exactly why you’re stuck.

Back then, the advice seemed simple: eat less, move more, cut carbs, avoid fat, and do hours of cardio. It worked—for a while. Maybe you saw the scale drop, felt lighter, and even got compliments on your “discipline.” But over time, those strategies started to backfire. Instead of feeling energized and strong, you began feeling exhausted, bloated, and stuck in a cycle of cravings, crashes, and frustration.

The truth is, the health and fitness advice that worked (or at least seemed to) in your younger years doesn’t align with what your body needs now. Your metabolism has changed. Your hormones have shifted. Stress affects you differently. Yet, if you’re still trying to eat like a 20-something influencer who swears by 1,200-calorie days and green smoothies, it’s no wonder you’re feeling drained, inflamed, and stuck in a weight loss plateau.

It’s time to rethink those outdated trends and start nourishing your body in a way that actually supports where you are now—not where you were 20 years ago.

Do you remember any of these trends?

Healthy Living Blogs Got It Wrong for Women in Their 40s

  • Tiny Spoons & Eating As Little As Possible: You thought the lowest calorie option was the “healthiest” choice, but it left you malnourished, weak, and exhausted, with sluggish thyroid function, hair loss, bloating, and gut issues. Not to mention, the obsession with fancy nut butters became your secret binge indulgence after all that restricting and undereating.

  • Oatmeal for Breakfast: Oatmeal can absolutely be part of a healthy breakfast, but if you’re in perimenopause or menopause and dealing with insulin resistance or blood sugar issues, it could spike your blood sugar and lead to an energy crashes and cravings later on. A better breakfast would be one high in protein, fat, and fiber.

  • Running More, More, More Miles: You believed more cardio = better results, but instead, it put stress on your body, wrecked your adrenals, broke down muscle, and led to chronic injuries that wouldn’t heal.

  • Going Vegan for “Health”: Cutting out animal products meant missing out on key nutrients, minerals, and amino acids, leaving you tired, depleted, losing your hair, and unable to build muscle.

  • Doing What Influencers Were Doing Instead of Listening to Your Body:
    • Choking down green juices and smoothie bowls even though they hurt your stomach and left you bloated.
    • Pushing through CrossFit or weekend long runs even though they drained you and left you injured.
    • Following gluten- and dairy-free diets even though you developed a strained relationship with food due to unnecessary restrictions and stress.

Do any of these resonate? Many of us, myself included, got sucked into the healthy living blogs of the time, following trends that seemed right but didn’t actually support our changing bodies.

And here’s the kicker: The strategies that once “worked” in our younger years don’t necessarily align with what our bodies need now. In our 40s, our hormones shift, metabolism slows, and stress has a greater impact. If you’re still eating and training the way you did in your 20s, you’re likely fighting an uphill battle.

But here’s the good news—you don’t have to stay stuck. By shifting your approach to fueling your body instead of depriving it, focusing on strength over endless cardio, and balancing stress instead of piling it on, you can start seeing the results you’ve been struggling to achieve.

It’s time to unlearn what isn’t serving you and start embracing what actually works for your body right now!

If you’re not feeling your best and have gained weight, it’s time for a different approach. That’s exactly what we do at Carrots ‘N’ Cake—helping you navigate perimenopause (and menopause) with a sustainable, personalized plan. Let us help you feel like yourself again!
