7 Ayurvedic Skin Care Tips That Work for All Skin Types

How to Practice Boat Pose

Even if a medical intervention isn’t in your birth plan, you should still be educated on it; because, at the end of the day, no one can predict their birth!  Today is all about: epidurals.

Joining me today on Yoga| Birth| Babies, I have Erin Capnerhurst. Erin is a wife, mother of three, and a Registered Nurse who has been supporting families through pregnancy and childbirth for 15 years in the hospital, clinic, and birth education settings. Most recently, Erin earned her Prenatal Yoga Teacher certification with the Prenatal Yoga Center!

Are there different types of epidurals? How should you push with an epidural? Is there only one position to push in when you get the epidural? Let’s dive in.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • About Erin and what inspired her to become a labor and delivery nurse
  • What the current data tells us about epidural rates in North America
  • The difference between a traditional epidural, spinal epidural, and combined spinal epidural
  • The best timing to get an epidural
  • Interventions that come along with getting an epidural and how a nurse monitors the patient during these interventions
  • How and why not all epidurals work the same for everyone
  • With an epidural, laboring people will not necessarily feel that urge to push; but they will feel pressure. Erin shares her suggestion for when to push once someone reaches 10cm.
  • How Erin guides and prepares someone to push with an epidural
  • How one, who is not feeling their contractions due to the epidural, can coordinate pushing with the peak of a contraction
  • Various ways someone can push with an epidural that still allows their pelvis and sacrum to open to its maximum potential
  • Erin’s thought on using a mirror or even having the patient’s hands towards their pelvic floor to feel where they are pushing, when they can’t feel their contractions with an epidural
  • What happens with the epidural once baby is born- how long it remains infusing, when it will be turned off, and when it will wear off
  • One final tip or piece of advice Erin would like to offer new and expectant parents
  • Where you can find her work

About Erin:

Erin is a wife, mother of three, and a Registered Nurse who has been supporting families through pregnancy and childbirth for 15 years in the hospital, clinic, and birth education settings. Most recently Erin earned her Prenatal Yoga Teacher certification with the Prenatal Yoga Center!

With a history as a student athlete and a degree in Physical Education and Biology prior to earning her Bachelor of Nursing degree, she has always had a wondrous curiosity for the human body and how it works. It was through supporting her sister in the birth of her second child that Erin witnessed first hand the power and transformation that lies within the miracle of childbirth. At this moment, supporting families in pregnancy, labour, and delivery became her passion. Since then she has stood alongside thousands of families as they welcomed their babies to the world.

She believes knowledge is power and being prepared for birth empowers people with the confidence to flow through their own unique childbirth journey.
